Mathematics
At RFPS we have adopted the mastery approach through the use of White Rose Maths to teach mathematics so that we teach for secure and deep understanding of mathematical concepts through manageable steps.
The National Curriculum states that ‘Mathematics is an interconnected subject in which pupils need to be able to move fluently between representations of mathematical ideas.’
We believe in helping engender an appreciation of human creativity and achievement.
At RFPS, we have adopted the mastery approach using White Rose Maths for mathematics so that we teach for secure and deep understanding of mathematical concepts through manageable steps. The National Curriculum states that ‘Mathematics is an interconnected subject in which pupils need to be able to move fluently between representations of mathematical ideas.’ We have chosen to follow the White Rose Maths scheme because it enables us to teach our pupils the knowledge and skills progressively to allow our pupils to move through concrete, pictorial and abstract mathematical concepts. The heart of our mathematical teaching and learning is conceptual understanding and developing fluency. By becoming fluent and able to recall key facts and skills quickly and efficiently, our pupils can reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry and develop and present justification/proof using mathematical language and examples. Our pupils solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems with increasing sophistication, including in unfamiliar contexts and to model real-life scenarios. Our vision is for our pupils to ‘know more, remember more and do more'’ both in the classroom and beyond their life in primary education. With our broad and balanced maths curriculum, we intend to embed the skills needed for all our pupils to develop their knowledge of careers and awareness of finances, enterprise, and entrepreneurship.
